Design LabSupervisorDon Gilmore, Senior Design Engineer DescriptionThe Design Laboratory develops the electronic instrumentation and electromechanical systems used in the investigation of neuromuscular performance by the NMRC laboratories. The technologies include the design of data acquisition and signal processing systems incorporating specialized electrodes for detecting and analyzing the surface electromyographic (EMG) signal in both laboratory and clinical settings. The laboratory designs and fabricates any associated experimental apparatus required by the researchers at the Center, including devices to isolate and measure human performance parameters such as muscle force, joint torque, and body posture. The current Design Lab focus centers on the integration of a multi-channel EMG detection system, a visual pattern display generator, an electrocutaneous stimulator, with the existing BALDER platform. These improvements to the BALDER system will provide researchers with the tools to better understand the mechanisms of balance and test new methods for providing feedback to individuals with balance dysfunction. Technology transfer contracts have been established for some of the devices and techniques created in this laboratory and in the NMRC to be available for purchase from DelSys, Inc. Projects
